Game 34: Orioles vs. Mariners

After being swept by the Rays, the O’s look to bounce back against the M’s in this midweek series.

Mariners:

Batting Fielding fWAR
Ichiro Suzuki .308/.354/.349 -7 0.0
Chone Figgins .217/.269/.308 3 0.3
Justin Smoak .293/.393/.535 0 1.1
Miguel Olivo .212/.246/.288 -2 -0.3
Jack Cust .198/.362/.248 0 0.0
Adam Kennedy .260/.295/.397 2 0.3
Carlos Peguero .182/.182/.182 0 -0.1
Brendan Ryan .208/.280/.260 -1 -0.1
Michael Saunders .170/.225/.255 4 0.0

The Mariners have a bit of a below average lineup (except for Ichiro and Justin Smoak so far) but have somewhat been getting it done (they sport a 16-19 record).  Hopefully the O’s can shut them down tonight.

Michael Pineda:

ERA FIP xFIP K/9 BB/9 GB% fWAR
2.58 2.51 3.33 9.2 2.8 31.3% 1.1

Pineda has been extremely effective this season.  A great compliment to Felix Hernandez, he has a great K:BB rate.  Though his GB% is low, most of his fly balls are weak pop-ups which stay in the yard.

He really brings the heat with a 96 MPH fastball (average, might I add) and a 96 MPH cutter.  His slider is very effective, usually coming off of his cutter or fastball.  His two-seamer also has some nice break.

Orioles:

Batting Fielding fWAR
Brian Roberts .221/.280/.359 -3 -0.1
Nick Markakis .227/.288/.318 -2 -0.3
Derrek Lee .233/.310/.349 -1 0.0
Vladimir Guerrero .267/.289/.389 0 -0.1
Luke Scott .253/.333/.505 1 0.7
Adam Jones .250/.291/.405 2 0.6
Matt Wieters .232/.315/.421 2 0.9
Mark Reynolds .187/.299/.336 -5 -0.3
J.J. Hardy .200/.294/.400 0 0.1

J.J. Hardy is finally back in the lineup after coming off his DL stint.  Should be nice to have him back in the lineup.

Jake Arrieta:

ERA FIP xFIP K/9 BB/9 GB% fWAR
4.35 4.05 3.79 7.6 3.4 43.5% 0.5

Though Arrieta’s numbers aren’t the greatest, he is sporting a 4-1 record.  He gets a good number of K’s each time he goes out on the bump and keeps the ball in the yard (for the most part).

Arrieta has a very good slider to complement his fastball/sinker.  And, when he can get that curveball working, it is very good.  It’s closer to a 12-6 breaker with a big hook.  He’s very good when he can control all his off-speed pitches well.
