Twins & Tigers Play An Instant Classic

The Tigers and the Twins played game 163 of the regular season to see who would win the AL Central and go to the playoffs. While having no real allegiance to either team, I was cheering for the Twins largely because they have Joe Mauer. The game went into the 12th inning before the Twins finally pulled it out for the 6-5 win, ending what might have been one of the greatest games I’ve ever seen. I haven’t yelled so much (in a good way) during a game in a while. While not exactly live-blogging it, I did comment on Twitter. Those posts can be found below, though they hardly do justice to the level of excitement. And check out the crazy Win Probability graph.

  • 1-2-3 first inning for Scott Baker. Hoping for a Twins win, even if the Tigers have a (slightly) better chance against the Yanks.
  • Joe Mauer with a line-drive hit up the middle, hustles into second with a double. MVP-MVP-MVP
  • Small strike-zone today, but I was expecting it thanks to Beyond The Box Score. Nice job Jeff: http://tinyurl.com/yez3g7l
  • And the Tigers take a 1-0, as Magglio Ordonez drives in Granderson.
  • Miguel Cabrera takes one out to dead center to put Detroit up 3-0. Boy, he sure admired it too.
  • Jason Kubel with a bomb, gets the Twins within one at 3-2. And the Star Wars theme plays in Minni. I’m not sure why, but I like it.
  • Porcello done after 5.2 IP. He leaves a runner on, but looked very good. I was impressed, and am higher on him now for ’10 than I was.
  • Orlando Cabrera! Two-Run homer! The Twins up 4-3! And the Star Wars theme plays again!
  • This is some really exciting baseball… and Mauer with another hit, just to lock in that batting title.
  • Oh my goodness. Maggs with a solo homer to tie the game at 4-4. I’m not really even a Twins fan, and this is tense.
  • What a job by Nathan to get out of that jam. Runners on the corners w/ no outs, gets a K and a line-drive double play. 4-4, bottom 9.
  • Going to extra innings. What a great way to get ready for the play-offs to start tomorrow.
  • And we have Huff-Daddy sighting. I actually forgot he was on the Tigers. Pinch-hits in the 10th and gets plunked on the foot.
  • Inge maybe saves the game in the bottom of the 9th with a diving play at 3rd, and maybe wins it in the top of the 10th w/ an RBI double. 5-4
  • Oh my goodness. Raburn dives for a Cuddyer bloop in LF and misses it. Goes all the way to the wall, and Cuddy has a lead-off triple. Wow.
  • Was 90% sure that was a game ending double play, but the ball got through and the game is tied. Just amazing.
  • He looked safe, but what an amazing play. Runner gets thrown out at home and we’re going to the 11th.
  • I don’t know if it’s really so awesome or if I’m just not used to watching important game. But it *seems* really awesome.
  • “Who the hell is Keppel and why is a guy with a 5.44 career ERA pitching in such an important situation?” – as an aside 10 seconds ago
  • Keppel gives up a double and it’s 2nd and 3rd with one out for Raburn.
  • IBB to load the bases for Inge… Brandon gets hit by the first pitch (which would force in the go-ahead run), but the ump misses it.
  • To the bottom of the 12th, still tied! Keppel gets out of it on a great play by Punto getting a force at home and a K. Wow.
  • Fernando Rodney – out for his 3rd inning – gives up a single to Casilla.. Gomez flies around third and comes in to score. The Twins win it!
  • What an amazingly great game.
